A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic by J. Penner

A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic is a bundle of fun! From start to end we go on a delightful journey with Arleta, a magicless human who has a heart set on baking. When her Orc fathers enter her into the kingdom’s biggest baking competition she has no thoughts of being chosen- then her invitation arrives! Found family, following your passions, and opening your heart to become your truest self are just a few of the wonderful moments sprinkled throughout this book.

There were several things that made this book really stand out to me. It was a cozy, wholesome, romantic, and occasionally funny read. I enjoyed the way that genuine mental health conditions came to light and were handled with care. Each of our main characters felt unique with a backstory and personality of their own, including loads of world building of different magical creatures and peoples. The magical system and hierarchy felt thought-out and was different than I’ve seen in other books.

Our main character Arleta certainly goes through the most character development, coming from a heart wrenching background she starts our story guarded, even from those she trusts the most. She is given an incredible opportunity but her self doubt and survival based need to stay safe cause her to almost pass at every opportunity to grow. Seeing her go through moments of anxiety and even panic attacks, and the care her new friends show to her were some of the sweetest moments in the book. The opportunity to find new friends and finally open up to new possibilities felt like a genuine inner journey.

Tropes: He fell first, Fated pair, Found family, Forced Proximity

Number of Times I Wanted to Throw the Book Across the Room: 1 Big One!

Did the Book Pass the “One More Chapter” Test?: Absolutely, I finished it in 24 hours because I couldn’t stop reading!

Number of Emotional Roller Coasters: 3 ,though each round of the baking competition puts you on edge.

Perfect snack pairing: Lemon Bars and tea. (there’s a recipe for this and several of the other pastries in the book!) This is not a book you want to read when you’re hungry!

Character I Would Most Like to Have a Drink With: Probably, Theo. I want to hear more about his plant and animal magic!!

Quote that perfectly sums up the main characters relationship: “You are magic- more than magic.”

Level of spice: 1/5, this story is romantic but very wholesome!
