The new genre of Cozy Fantasy has been on the rise in its unique combination of slice-of-life warmth and romance, alongside the high fantasy and real stakes. Book 2 of the Emily Wilde Series, Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands, by Heather Fawcett was a fantastic continuation of book 1, and of the cozy fantasy genre. This novel begins with the main characters we’ve come to know and love, as their victories and weaknesses from their first adventure begin catching up with them. Back on their home turf we find a new cast of characters and an expansion on their world.
Back at the university, Emily Wilde is teaching, researching, and writing while navigating a sometimes-romantic relationship with fellow professor (and secret fairy) Wendell Bambleby. With her Encyclopedia of Fairies completed, Emily’s new project is a map of the fairy realm, a feat that has never been accomplished before. When trouble finds them, a new rescue mission begins with an unlikely group of friends that changes their lives forever.
This book, like the first one, is a slow paced, but action packed novel. There are moments of laughter, tears, anger, and a few times you’ll want to throw the book at the wall. Due to the journal-style writing, some tension is lost as everything is written in past tense, but it’s the price for first person view, and a bit of fun when Emily isn’t the only one writing in her journal. The character development from the first book is plainly present, and continued throughout this novel. Trust has grown, affection is present, but not everyone is ready to dive headfirst into love. Emily is still organized, stern, and terribly curious.
There are many new characters, including Emily’s curious and excitable niece, Ariadne, and Professor Eichorn, an esteemed colleague that wants no nonsense in his day. We also get to explore many new areas of the fairy realm, learn about Wendell’s family history, and find out if Emily will ever open her heart. Overall I had a wonderful time devouring this story and I simply cannot wait for the next one!
